La Fontaine wurde geboren als Sohn eines bürgerlichen, aber mit seinen Chargen zum niederen Amtsadel zählenden Königlichen Rats (Conseiller du Roi) sowie Jagd- und Fischereiaufsehers (Maître des Eaux et Forêts) – ein Amt, das er 1658 erben, aber nie regelmäßig ausüben und 1670 verkaufen sollte.
Nachdem er vergeblich eine Bitt-Ode für Fouquet an den König gerichtet hatte, verreiste er 1663 vorsichtshalber, zusammen mit dem sich ebenfalls gefährdet fühlenden Onkel seiner Frau, für ein paar Monate nach Limoges.
Ebenfalls 1683 wurde La Fontaine in die Académie française gewählt, allerdings bestätigte Ludwig XIV., der inzwischen unter dem Einfluss der fromm gewordenen Mme de Maintenon stand, die Wahl erst nach längerem Zögern.
