Fontbonne was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and today offers 28 majors, 18 minors and 11 master's degree programs -- including a nationally known deaf education major.
Student Protest
Though known as a conservative institution, Fontbonne faced student protests in October of 1970, when black female students seized the library to demand more black students and teachers, and a role in shaping courses and cultural programming.
At Fontbonne, the assistants have a similar role to a new faculty member at a university, with their own office space and participation in faculty meetings and other activities.
Fontbonne faculty members and SLU's coordinator, Dr. Donna Eisenstadt, mentor the students, who also receive a travel stipend through Fontbonne.
They spend 20 hours per week at Fontbonne, which allows them time to spend with their SLU mentors and to continue to make progress on their dissertations.
