Many food crises have occurred in the world today. The US has been seen by some to have fewer agricultural crises than the UK and Europe. Events such as Mad cow disease (BSE) and Foot and Mouth disease which happened in the UK, and dioxin contamination which happened in Belgium, and the spread of blood infected with HIV had a lasting impact on British and European trust in their governments and in the practices of agribusiness.

Global food crises have pushed food aid requirements to their highest point ever while food aid availability has dropped to it lowest point in five years, according to the administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Where sufficient food is available for the local population -- yet widespread food insecurity and hunger exists -- we need a broader range of non-food famine prevention tools that can effectively address those factors that limit access to and utilization of those food resources.
This assistance totals approximately 25 percent of the 2002/2003 food aid requirement in the country and, together with the contributions of other donors, is expected to meet the needs of the country through the end of May of this year.

Lewis said severe food shortages had worsened an HIV/Aids pandemic which is killing an average 2 500 Zimbabweans a week and accounts for up to 80% of hospital admissions in the capital Harare.
