A total of 34 teams entered the 1950 World Cup qualification rounds, competing for a total of 16 spots in the final tournament. Brazil, as the hosts, and Italy, as the defending champions, qualified automatically, leaving 14 spots open for competition. The 1950 Football World Cup is the only one which never had a single final match. ...


The remaining 32 teams were divided into 10 groups. The 16 spots available in the World Cup would be distributed as follows:

  • Europe: 8 places, 1 of them went to automatic qualifier Italy, while the other 7 places were contested by 18 teams (including Israel and Syria).
  • South America: 5 places, 1 of them went to automatic qualifier Brazil, while the other 4 places were contested by 7 teams.
  • North, Central America and Caribbean: 2 places, contested by 3 teams.
  • Asia: 1 place, contested by 4 teams.

Europe

The 18 teams were divided into 7 groups. Each group had different rules, as follows:

  • Groups 1 had 4 teams, playing against each other once, with the winner and the runner-up of the group qualifying.
  • Groups 2, 3 and 4 had 3 teams each, 1 of them seeded and the other 2 unseeded, with two rounds of play. In the First Round, the 2 unseeded teams of the group would play against each other on a home-and-away basis, with the winner advancing to the Final Round. In the Final Round, the winner of the First Round would play against the seeded team of the group on a home-and-away basis, with the winner qualifying.
  • Group 5 had 3 teams and Group 6 had 2 teams, playing against each other on a home-and-away basis, with the winner of each group qualifying.

The world was returning to a form of normality which was to persist until the collapse of Communism in the former Soviet Union.
The World Cup was gaining increasing status as a truly world-wide event, although the absence of African representation was, at least in part, an unfortunate consequence of the colonial status of much of that benighted continent.
This system had a hole, because of their surprising qualification at the expense of Spain, who had reached the final pool in the previous World Cup, Turkey were seeded in Hungary’s group, even though it was clear, even at the time, that the West German team was far stronger.

The 1950 Football World Cup is the only one which never had a single final match (though the final match of the tournament did decide the overall winner, and this match is sometimes referred to as if it were a final).
Because of World War II, the World Cup had not been held since 1938; In the aftermath of the conflict, Europe lay in ruins after the ravaging effects of the war.
For some time, the World Cup of 1950 was at risk of not being held for sheer lack of interest from the international community, until Brazil presented a bid.
