Encyclopedia > Football World Cup 1986 (qualification UEFA)

Listed below are the dates and results for the 1986 World Cup qualification rounds for Europe. A total of 32 teams took part, contesting 12.5 spots. Italy, the defending champions, were already qualified, for a total of 13.5 places. The 1986 Football World Cup was held in Mexico from May 31 to June 29. ... UEFA logo The Union of European Football Associations, almost always referred to by the acronym UEFA (pronounced you-AY-fuh), is the administrative and controlling body for European football. ...

The 32 teams were divided in 7 groups - 4 groups of 5 teams each and 3 groups of 4 teams each. The teams in each group would play against each other in a home-and-away basis. In groups with 5 teams, the two teams with most points in each group would qualify to the World Cup. In groups with 4 teams (groups 1, 5 and 7), only the team with most points would qualify. Also, runners-up of groups 1 and 5 would play-off against each other home-and-away, and the runner-up of group 7 would take part in an Intercontinental Play-off against the best team from Oceania. Winners of these two play-offs would also qualify to the World Cup.
