Listed below are the dates and results for the 2002 World Cup qualification rounds for Africa. 51 teams signed up, but Burundi withdrew even before the rules were set, so just 50 teams strove for the 5 places available. The qualification was composed of two Rounds. In the First Round, the 50 teams were divided in five Pools, and paired 2-by-2. The teams would play knock-out matches home-and-away. The five winners of each knock-out match would advance to the Second Round.


In the Second Round, the 25 teams were divided in 5 groups. Teams in each group would play against each other in a home-and-away basis. Team with most points in each group would qualify to the World Cup.
