Greece proper was gradually conquered by the Ottomans during the 15th century.
As a result of illegal immigrants residing in Greece, both right-wing nationalist political forces and the majority of the Greek populace are calling for the expulsion of all illegal immigrants and the strengthening of Greece's borders.
Greece also has some Roman Catholics, mainly in the city of Patras and the Cyclades islands of Syros, Paros and Naxos; some Protestants and some Jews, mainly in Thessaloniki (which was once a major Jewish city at least until the Balkan Wars).

Greece is a country in the southeast of Europe on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula.
It is bounded on land by Bulgaria, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the north, to the east by Turkey and the waters of the Aegean Sea and to the west and south by the Ionian and Mediterranean Seas.
According to the 2001 census, the population of Greece was 10,964,020.
