It was generally panned by fans and critics alike at the time of its release. Band members have stated that the album was only made in order to fulfill contractual obligations with label I.R.S. Records, and this has been used as an excuse for what many consider to be poor musical quality.


Opening track "The Illusion of Power" is the most experimental track on the album, featuring rapper Ice T of the band Body Count on one verse. This is the only time a guest vocalist has been used on a Sabbath album. Body Count band member Ernie-C also produced the album, which fueled a backlash from longtime fans.
