Encyclopedia > Ford Fox platform

The Ford Fox platform was a rear wheel drive, unibody automobile architecture that Ford used for over 25 years in the North American market. It was designed to be relatively light-weight and simple, in keeping with the general downsizing of Detroit designs in the late 1970s.

Its inital appearance was in the compact car class, when the Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr appeared in 1978. Eventually a wide range of Ford models in several market segments would be built off it, with multiple bodystyles and powertrains.

SN-95

The Fox Mustang was redesigned in 1994 under the program code name SN-95. This version was wider and many parts were redesigned. The Fox saw gradually decreasing use as more Ford products went to front-drive. It finally ended production with the last 2004 Mustang. This platform was replaced for 2005 with the new Ford D2C platform.

In 1979, Ford released an all new Mustang.
Ford’s own design engineers and their design documents evidence that locating the fuel tank under the rear seat is a safer location and that there would be less chance of a post collision fuel fed fire if the tanks were moved there.
Indeed, Ford has moved the fuel tank to a safer location in almost all of their modern cars, the only real exceptions being the Mustang and the Crown Victoria (which also has a rear impact fire problem and is the subject of a recent recall to add additional crash shields).

Ford Division ushered in 1958 by unveiling the four-passenger Thunderbird before a group of prominent Americans at a New Year’s Eve Party at the exclusive Thunderbird Golf Club in Palm Springs, Calif. The public introduction was later in January.
Ford's Fox platform was introduced during the '78 model year on the Fairmont compact replacement for the Maverick and a cleaved-down version of the Fox would underpin the Mustang all the way from '79 to 2004.
All Fox platform vehicles were unibody structures with modified MacPherson strut front suspension and a solid rear axle on coil springs.
