There were two Battle of the Ford of Isen. The first battle took place on on the 23 February TA 3019. The second was on the 2 March TA 3019. First Battle

Theodred, son of King Theoden of Rohan was alerted of the mustering taking place in Isengard by his scouts. He manned both sides of the ford and went forward and left three companies of riders to guard the eastern side ford. Early in the morning, he crossed over to the western side with a force mainly consisting of archers and cavalry. He planned to take the forces of Uruk Hai by suprise. Théodred (T.A. 2978-3019) is a fictional character in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. ... In J.R.R. Saruman had tricked the scouts and his army was already marching out to attack the ford. 20 miles top the north of the ford, Theodred encountered the vanguard of the Uruk Hai and quickly cut through their lines. He then charged at the main force who been prepared for the attack and were behind trenches manned with pikes. Reinforcements came out of Isengard and outflanked the cavalry and nearly encircled them. Hastly Theodred ordered a retreat but the Uruk Hai could not be shaken off that easily. Grimbold who was in command of the rearguard had to cut down the formost pursuer many times.


Saruman's eastern force was much smaller but more dangerous. It contained mounted Dunlendings, Warg Riders and Uruk Hai Beserkers. The Rohirrim guard on the eastern side of the ford had been driven into retreat and their victors recrossed the ford the attack Theodred on both sides. Theodred and his men had dismounted on an eyot to cover Grimbold's retreat. At the same time Grimbold's force was beening attacked from the western side and as Grimbold looked east he saw theodred's force beening driven from the eyot to a hill. Grimbold with afew men raced toward Theodred's posistion. Theodred was cutting his way through the Uruk Hai lines. But by the time Grimbold reached his posistion Theodred had fallen. He had been cut down by a giant orc. Grimbold slew the orc and then found himself defending the body from orcs. He himself would have been cut down had it not been for Elfhelm]. Dunland is a fictional land from J. R. R. Tolkiens fictional universe of Middle-earth: the land of the Dunlendings. ...


Elfhelm had been leading four companies towards Helm's Deep, when it was reported to him that two Warg Rider had been spotted. He rode at full speed to the ford. When he saw the situation he ordered his men to charge. Before long he had the western side of the ford. They then charged and the eyot. At this suprise attack most of the Uruk Hai retreated towards Isengard. When they reached the eyot they found Grimbold fighting over Theodred's body against two huge orcs. Elfhelm rushed to his aid and fell one orc while Grimbold slew the other. When they lifted the body they found he was still alive. He lived long enough to say "Let me lie here- to keep the ford until Eomer comes". The enemy attacked ended by nightfall. The Rohirrim had held the ford ford but suffered heavy losses and were now leaderless. In J. R. R. Second Battle

The command of the ford was givem to Erkenbrand of the Westfold. Until he arrived from Helm's Deep, Grimbold held the posistion. Grimbold decided to place foot soldiers of the ford and place Elfhelm's men on the east side were he expected the attack to come from. Erkenbrand is a character from J. R. R. Tolkiens novel The Lord of the Rings. ...


Saruman sent a small, big enough to outnumber the defenders. The attackers forced Grimbold to retreat across the ford with heavy losses. Grimbold held the eastern side of the ford and was waiting for Elfhelm to come to his aid. More than half of Saruman's force was attacking Grimbold's posistion.


Some Warg Riders and their followers went through the gap between the two Rohirrim forces and tried to encircle Elfhelm. Even though he knew that Grimbold was in danger, Elfhelm retreated eastwards. Grimbold still held his posistion when he saw torches coming from the north and from Isengard. The vanguard of Saruman's reinforcements advancing towards him. Before he knew it they had crossed the ford. He could not hold the ford so he retreated to his camp and made a shield wall around it.


Soon he was surrounded, still the forces of Isengard could not brake through. Grimbold knew he could hold out forever and there wasn't any sign of Elfhelm and he wouldn't get help from Erkenbrand he decided to try to break out. He mounted all the riders for whom he had horses and made a gap on the east side of the wall and the riders passed. They formed into two groups and they attacked the north and south sides respectivly. With the confusion that this attack caused the remaining Rohirrim retreated on foot as quickly as they could in the dark.


Saruman's commander had finished his first task of creating a supply route into Rohan and he now moved on to his more important task the Hornburg.

The river Isen (Sindarin Angren) was not crossable anywhere south of its origin in Isengard, except at the Fords of Isen which were just above the point where the Isen bent west towards Belegaer.
