Forest Hill is a city located in Tarrant County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,949.


Geography

Forest Hill is located at 32°39'48" North, 97°16'6" West (32.663383, -97.268292)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.0 km˛ (4.2 mi˛). 11.0 km˛ (4.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,949 people, 3,699 households, and 2,944 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,176.4/km˛ (3,049.7/mi˛). There are 3,876 housing units at an average density of 352.1/km˛ (912.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 33.62% White, 57.06% African American, 0.42% Native American, 1.14% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 6.33% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 18.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,699 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 20.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% are non-families. 17.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.04 and the average family size is 3.42.


In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 114.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 119.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $37,473, and the median income for a family is $40,357. Males have a median income of $29,097 versus $25,527 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,027. 16.0% of the population and 11.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Forest Hill is at the intersection of Interstate Highway 20/820 and State Highway 496, eight miles southeast of Fort Worth in south central Tarrant County.
By 1905 Forest Hill operated no school for fl students and two schools for white; the schools had 226 students and four teachers.
Forest Hill continued to grow as a result of its proximity to Fort Worth: in 1967 its population was 3,800; in 1976 it was 19,250, and in 1990 it was 11,482.
