It was one of the original London & Croydon Railway stations opened on 5 June 1839: its original name was Dartmouth Arms from the name of the local inn. Its full name became Forest Hill for Lordship Lane under its owners, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, who built new station buildings. These have now been replaced by an ugly modern structure. The current whereabouts of the plaque commemorating the visit of Frank Bruno is not known.
