Forest Hills is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 6,831.

Geography

Forest Hills is located at 40°25'19" North, 79°51'7" West (40.421918, -79.851872)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.0 km˛ (1.6 mi˛). 4.0 km˛ (1.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,831 people, 3,050 households, and 1,976 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,690.7/km˛ (4,381.3/mi˛). There are 3,203 housing units at an average density of 792.7/km˛ (2,054.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 94.73% White, 2.99% African American, 0.03% Native American, 1.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,050 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.82.


In the borough the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.5 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $44,922, and the median income for a family is $56,199. Males have a median income of $42,903 versus $31,103 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $26,505. 5.6% of the population and 4.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.2% of those under the age of 18 and 2.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Koch was succeeded by Richard E. Wise in 1966, Robert Disney in 1974, Alfred A. McCloy in 1982, Elmer I Incheck in 1986, all elected Mayors.
In 1936, an area adjacent to Braddock Road and Ardmore Boulevard, was acquired for the Forest Hills Park, with the legal provision that this property belonged to the taxpayers of the Borough and can never be sold without their consent.
The Woodland Hills School District, of which Forest Hills schools are a part, constructed a four million dollar Senior High School for opening in 1963.
