Fort Duchesne is a census-designated place located in Uintah County, Utah. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 621, a slight decrease from the 1990 figure of 655.


Geography

Fort Duchesne is located at 40°17'36" North, 109°51'48" West (40.293199, -109.863329)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 19.8 km˛ (7.7 mi˛). 18.2 km˛ (7.0 mi˛) of it is land and 1.7 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 8.36% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 621 people, 165 households, and 138 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 34.2/km˛ (88.5/mi˛). There are 183 housing units at an average density of 10.1/km˛ (26.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 5.48% White, 0.00% African American, 90.18% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 4.03% from two or more races. 5.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 165 households out of which 46.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.3% are married couples living together, 43.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 15.8% are non-families. 13.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.61 and the average family size is 3.78.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 40.1% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 14.7% from 45 to 64, and 4.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.4 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $18,750, and the median income for a family is $14,688. Males have a median income of $30,714 versus $20,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $6,466. 54.6% of the population and 52.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 57.4% of those under the age of 18 and 52.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
