Fort Irwin Military Reservation, located in Fort Irwin, California, U.S., this military facility is used for live-fire training of brigade-sized forces. Irwin is also home of the National Training Center (NTC), the U.S. Army's premier heavy maneuver Combat Training Center (CTC). The base is part of Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). As of 2005 Commanding General at Fort Irwin is Brigadier General Robert W. Cone. The Opposing Force at the NTC is the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, the Blackhorse Regiment who are permanently deployed at the base to provide an enemy force to units on a training rotation at Fort Irwin. FortIrwin is located approximately 37 miles northeast of Barstow, California in the High Mojave Desert midway between Las Vegas, Nevada and Los Angeles, California.
FortIrwin maintains a small town atmosphere with town hall meetings and other community forums even though 4000-5000 soldiers from other installations rotate through the NTC each month.
The MATES at FortIrwin is scheduled to have a new twenty million-dollar facility built in the year 2002.
