History

Fort McNair was established in 1791, but it was known as Greenleaf Point at the time. Originally 28 acres, "The U.S. Arsenal at Greenleat Point" expanded to 89 acres. Just north of the fort was the site of the first federal penitentiary - where the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination were executed. The fort was home to an Army general hospital from 1898 until 1909. Major Walter Reed conducted research there, a site which was the precursor to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. 1791 (MDCCXCI) was a common year starting on Saturday (see link for calendar) of the Gregorian calendar (or a common year starting on Tuesday of the 11-day-slower Julian calendar). ... McNair

The fort officially got its current name in 1948, to honor World War II US Army Ground Forces commander Lt. Gen. Lesley J. McNair. McNair was killed on July 25, 1944 at Normandy, by friendly fire.
