Fort Mitchell is a city located in Kenton County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,089.


Geography

Fort Mitchell is located at 39°2'50" North, 84°33'36" West (39.047221, -84.559993)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.1 km˛ (3.1 mi˛). 8.1 km˛ (3.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,089 people, 3,530 households, and 2,033 families residing in the city. The population density is 997.8/km˛ (2,581.8/mi˛). There are 3,744 housing units at an average density of 461.8/km˛ (1,195.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 96.87% White, 0.99% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,530 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.4% are non-families. 35.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 3.05.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $46,335, and the median income for a family is $63,910. Males have a median income of $41,358 versus $29,873 for females. The per capita income for the city is $29,229. 3.4% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Fort Mitchell is a suburban community in the hills of north Kenton County.
The fort was occupied by Union army soldiers and local Home Guard in response to the Confederate invasion of Kentucky in the late summer of 1862.
During planning of I-75 in the 1950's, fears that the interstate would cut through the area raising homes proved to be unfounded, but a sharp S curve and a steep grade resulted, creating a hazard that later was to become known as Death Hill for large number of traffic fatalities there.
