Encyclopedia > Fort Necessity

Fort Necessity was a British fortress west of the Pennsylvania colony. It was captured by the French in 1754, though George Washington tried to defend it. Washington faced the French several times, once under the command of General Braddock. Braddock was not fimilar with the tactics used in the New world, for in the old world soldiers lined up and fired at each other. Braddock tried resorting to these tactics again agasint the French and Indians at the fort but was brutally slaughtered. Braddock and roughly 800 men of the original 1400 were injured in the battle and Braddock soon died from the wounds. Washington and his men, roughly 400 or so, mostly survived the battle, for they were used to the new world tactics of hiding and shooting(similar to guerillia warfare). Washingont later captured the fort when a new general was appointed by Britian , this being General Forbes. Forbes then appointed William Pitt in charge of relinguishing the French of the once British Fort. Forbes appointed 4000 or so men under Pitts command, not including Washingtons 800 from the colonial army. This was the main catalyst of why the French abandoned the fort.
