Fort Pierce South is a census-designated place located in St. Lucie County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,672.

Geography

Fort Pierce South is located at 27°24'57" North, 80°21'9" West (27.415937, -80.352378)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.7 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 5,672 people, 2,053 households, and 1,478 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 486.7/km² (1,259.5/mi²). There are 2,213 housing units at an average density of 189.9/km² (491.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 77.29% White, 13.13% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.73% from other races, and 2.57% from two or more races. 17.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,053 households out of which 35.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $31,308, and the median income for a family is $35,383. Males have a median income of $26,830 versus $21,810 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,801. 17.6% of the population and 12.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.1% of those under the age of 18 and 9.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
