Fort Riley North is the United States Census Bureau's designation for a part of Fort Riley, a US Army installation located in Kansas. The area is more commonly known as "Custer Hill". As of the 2000 census, the area had a total population of 8,114.


Geography

Fort Riley North is located at 39°5'18" North, 96°48'51" West (39.088222, -96.814092)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.3 km˛ (5.1 mi˛). 13.2 km˛ (5.1 mi˛) of it is land and 0.20% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,114 people, 1,305 households, and 1,277 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 613.1/km˛ (1,586.7/mi˛). There are 1,335 housing units at an average density of 100.9/km˛ (261.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 59.96% White, 24.59% African American, 1.23% Native American, 2.10% Asian, 0.58% Pacific Islander, 6.33% from other races, and 5.21% from two or more races. 12.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,305 households out of which 84.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 89.0% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 2.1% are non-families. 1.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.79 and the average family size is 3.82.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 36.4% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 0.6% from 45 to 64, and 0.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 194.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 260.7 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $29,225, and the median income for a family is $28,952. Males have a median income of $17,439 versus $17,243 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $11,171. 12.5% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.2% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

RILEY County was the westernmost county of Kansas, having the Kansas River for its southern boundary, among those organized by the Territorial Legislature of 1865.
On the north it is bounded by Washington, Marshall, and Pottawatomie; on the east by Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee; on the south by Wabaunsee and Davis; on the west by Davis and Clay.
Riley County received its name directly from the military post of Fort Riley, and indirectly from General Benjamin Riley, an officer of the United States Army.

Fort Riley water supply wells are located more than 3 miles from the fire training pit; the Junction City wells are located slightly more than 4 miles away; and the town of Ogden wells are approximately 4.5 miles northeast of and on the opposite side of the river from the fire training pit.
Fort Riley has proposed installing a new common alluvial well outside the influence of contamination to replace the R-1 and R-2 wells; replacement of the M-1 well is a contingency plan if contaminants in that well are found to exceed MCLs.
Fort Riley became concerned when lead bullet fragments were noted in the fill material used at the schools.
