Fort Shaw is a census-designated place located in Cascade County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 274.


Geography

Fort Shaw is located at 47°30'16" North, 111°48'41" West (47.504313, -111.811348)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.6 km˛ (5.6 mi˛). 14.6 km˛ (5.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 274 people, 101 households, and 73 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 18.8/km˛ (48.6/mi˛). There are 115 housing units at an average density of 7.9/km˛ (20.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.81% White, 0.00% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 1.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 101 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.32.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.3 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $36,250, and the median income for a family is $45,357. Males have a median income of $34,688 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $17,381. 9.3% of the population and 7.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Fort Shaw, Montana (98 words)
Fort Shaw, located on the Sun River twenty-four miles west of Great Falls, has been coined the “Queen of Montana’s Posts.” Boasting one building 125 feet long, the first professional stage performance in Montana was presented here.
The theater had log seats, and the entire orchestra rose in unison and turned down the kerosene lamps that lined the stage to dim the lights during a play.
First a military post and later a school for Native Americans, Fort Shaw remains today to tell of a lively past.
