Fort Stanton (built 1855) was a U.S. militaryfort built in New Mexico in the United States. It was established to protect settlements along the Rio Bonito in the Apache Wars. Fort Stanton property became America's first federal tuberculosis hospital. In World War II it interned both German and Japanese.
FortStanton was named for Captain Henry W. Stanton who helped lead an expedition against the Apaches in January of 1855 near the Rio Penasco, or modern day Mayhill.
The name FortStanton was only meant to be a temporary designation, which obviously was never changed.
Although the Confederates were able to gain control of the fort, the single company stationed there was unable to control the Mescalero Apaches who ultimately forced the troops to abandon the fort.
