Fort Washington is the site of Fort Washington Park, which was for many decades the only defensive fort protecting Washington D.C. The fort, now maintained by the National Park Service, is a stone structure with a good cannon shot down the Potomac River. During the War of 1812, the Fort was quickly abandoned during a British advance. Offshore from the fort are the wrecked remains of the USS Princeton, a warship that accidentally exploded prior to the American Civil War. The extensive park grounds with their river view and hiking paths are a scenic place for picnicking, fishing and outdoor recreation. Near the fort are many impressive luxury riverfront homes, two marinas, and the Tantallon country club and golf course. The area was rural until about 1960 when suburban growth began and is continuing to grow, adding new, oversized homes. About 1980 the postal service split the area from Oxon Hill, giving it a separate town address.
