Fort Yates is a city located in Sioux County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 228. It is the county seat of Sioux County6.


The 19th century American Indian leader Sitting Bull is buried just outside Fort Yates.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛). 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 228 people, 73 households, and 47 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,467.2/km˛ (3,688.4/mi˛). There are 78 housing units at an average density of 501.9/km˛ (1,261.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 5.26% White, 0.00% African American, 93.42% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 3.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 73 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.8% are married couples living together, 26.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.12 and the average family size is 3.85.


In the city the population is spread out with 35.5% under the age of 18, 15.4% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 14.9% from 45 to 64, and 5.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $25,500, and the median income for a family is $31,875. Males have a median income of $26,125 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,512. 14.4% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.2% of those under the age of 18 and 17.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The artesian basin is in North Dakota sandstone at the base of the upper cretacean, at a depth of from eight hundred feet in the south-east to fifteen hundred feet at Devil's Lake.
