Encyclopedia > Fortun I of Pamplona

Fortun Garces was the King of Pamplona reigning at least 882-905 and died after 925. This is a list of the kings of Navarre. ...

He was the eldest son of King Garcia Iniguez, himself the son of king Eneko Aritza, and apparently succeeded when his father was killed at Ayhar (882) in a battle against the Emir of Cordova. Though it seems that Fortun had one or some kinsmen as co-kings during his reign. King Inigo Iniguez Aritza (Iñigo Iñiguez Arista, in Basque, Eneko Aritza) was the first King of Navarre in the 9th century. ...

Fortun Garcez was imprisoned by the Moors and was held a prisoner for fifteen years by the infidels. This probably took place in and after 905, although sources are sketchy and unclear.

After a reign of twenty-two years, Fortun decided to become a monk at Leyra, the oldest convent in Navarre, to which no less than seventy-two other convents were subject.

His kinsman Sancho I of Pamplona now was the choice of the Navarrese as the next monarch, despite the fact that Fortun was not yet dead. A prisoner was however not a practical king in those times, so Sancho I ascended in 905.
