Forty Licks is a double compilation album by The Rolling Stones. A forty-year career-spanning retrospective, Forty Licks is notable for being the first retrospective to combine the band's formative Decca/London era of the 1960s, now licensed by ABKCO Records, with their self-owned post-1970 material, currently distributed by Virgin Records. History

Compiled following the enormous success of The Beatles' 1 compilation from 2000, Forty Licks is generally considered to be the definitive Rolling Stones retrospective, even though some worthy material is considered to be excluded due to time constrictions. While Disc 1 centers on the period ranging from 1964 to 1971, it lacks "Time Is on My Side", "As Tears Go By", "Little Red Rooster", "Lady Jane", "Midnight Rambler", and "We Love You." Furthermore, the addition of four new songs on its second disc, which concentrates on the 1971-2002 era ensures that additional material such as "Bitch", "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)", "Hot Stuff," "Respectable," "Waiting on a Friend," "Dead Flowers," "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," and "Harlem Shuffle" remain absent, while many of the songs presented are in edited form. It is for this reason that 1993's more expansive Jump Back: The Best of The Rolling Stones has had enduring popularity with certain factions of the band's following. Of the four new songs, "Don't Stop" was promoted as a single, becoming a minor hit in both the UK and the US. Barnes & Noble.com - Music: Forty Licks (Ltd. Ed. Box Set), The Rolling Stones, CD (785 words)
Forty Licks, like Elvis' 30 #1 Hits, is a career-spanning compilation that wouldn't have happened without the unprecedented, blockbuster success of Beatles 1.
Where Elvis' set is hurt by the simple fact that there are too many damn Elvis comps on the market, the Rolling Stones benefit greatly from the fact that there has not been any set that chronicles all their recordings from the '60s through the '90s.
At first, the nonchronological order seems to be a mistake, but both discs flow well, especially since they're roughly divided thematically (the first is devoted largely to the '60s, with the rest on the second).
ABC - DIG - 29/10/2002: Forty Licks (1062 words)
So, for the most part, Forty Licks shows the Stones after they were fully formed and had become a powerful and successful force.
Sure the tracks on Forty Licks are remastered but unless you have an expensive hi fi system or a great set of headphones you’ll never know the difference.
Forty Licks might be digitally re-mastered, but it just doesn't have the sound of real vinyl.
