Encyclopedia > Forum Boarium

The Forum Boarium was the cattle market of ancient Rome. It was located at a flat place near the Tiber at the foot of the Palatine and Aventine hills. It was the site of the massive 6th or 5th century BC "Great Altar of Hercules, as well as a 2nd century BC temple of Hercules and an old temple of Portunes. The Forum Holitorium was close by.
