The Forzani Group Ltd. is a Calgary, Alberta based national sporting goods retailer in Canada. It operates under four corporate banners: Sport Chek, Coast Mountain Sports and Sport Mart. It also franchises under Sports Experts, Intersport,Tech Shop, Atmosphere,RnR and finally Econosports.


With revenues closing in on a billion dollars a year (Canadian), Forzani Group Ltd. (FGL) currently accounts for 16.4% of the Canadian sporting goods retailing market, which in 2003 was worth $6.753 billion dollars Canadian. FGL competes on a regional basis with independent retailers and regional chains, and on the national level with Canadian Tire, Hudsons Bay Company, Walmart and Sears. With 391 stores shared between their corporate and franchise banners, Forzani has dominated the market for years and shows no signs of slowing. Its threats include seasonality, foreign competition, debt levels and consistent brand imaging.


History

In 1974, John Forzani along with three Calgary Stampeders team-mates opened a 1,200 square foot (110 mē) retail location in Calgary known as "Forzani's Locker Room".

Forzani - whose retail banners include Sport Chek, Coast Mountain Sports, Sport Mart and Forzani's - also reported Friday that fourth-quarter revenue for the fiscal year ended Jan. 27 was up 37 per cent from a year earlier.
