Encyclopedia > France and England in North America

France and England in North America is an eight-volume history written by Francis Parkman. The initial volume was initially published in 1851 and the last in 1892. It was well-regarded at the time of publication, and continues to enjoy a reputation both as an excellent historical study and literary masterpiece.


The eight volumes, and the dates of first publication, are:

  • Pioneers of France in the New World (1865)
  • The Jesuits in North America in the 17th Century (1867)
  • The Discovery of the Great West (1869)
  • The Old Regime in Canada (1874)
  • Count Frontenac and New France under Louis XIV (1877)
  • Montcalm and Wolfe (1884)
  • A Half-Century of Conflict (1892)
  • The History of the Conspiracy of Pontiac (1851)

It embraced the whole story of French colonization in North America from the Huguenot colonies of the sixteenth century to the fall of Quebec.
