The war was the culmination of the political American Revolution, whereby the colonists overthrew British rule.
At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War the British Regular Army comprised 2 Troops of Horse Guards, 5 Regiments of Horse, 3 Regiments of Dragoon Guards, 14 Regiments of Dragoons, 3 Regiments of Light Dragoons, 3 Regiments of Foot Guards and 70 Regiments of Foot.
During the Wars (for during this period the fighting was not constant) warfare was to change and move towards modern warfare leaving behind forever the idea of war as a sport of kings and moving towards the concept of Total War and the nations in arms.

The American Revolutionary War (also known as the American War of Independence) was a war fought between the Kingdom of Great Britain and its North American colonies (these colonies allied with France, from 1775 to 1783).
In April 1782, the British House of Commons voted to end the war with the American colonies and the government of war proponent Lord North was ousted.
According to data from the Daughters of the American Revolution, the last surviving U.S. veteran of the conflict, George Fruits, died in 1876 at the age of 114.
