FrancescoHayez (Venezia 1791-Milano 1882), whose father was French, was initiated into painting by one of his uncles, an antique dealer, Francesco Binasco who wanted Hayez to become a painting restorer.
Hayez was perfectly integrated into the ardent neoclassical movement in Milan.
In the dispute between classicists and romantics about the partecipation in the romantic renovation process, Hayez imposed himself as a reference point of a modern art with his painting “Pietro Rossi prigioniero degli Scaligeri”(Pietro Rossi prisoner of the Scaligeris) that was succesfully exhibited at Brena exhibition of 1820.
