Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1395-1482) was an Italian painter of the Sienese School, who apprenticed with Vecchietta. Also known for architectural designs and sculptural work for Federico II da Montefeltro. Wrote an architectural treatise Trattati di architettura, ingegneria e arte militare sometime after 1482. The Sienese School of painting flourished in Italy between the 13th and 15th centuries and for a time rivalled Florence, though it was more conservative, being inclined towards the decorative beauty and elegant grace of late Gothic art. ... Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Sienese painter, sculptor, architect and engineer, belongs to a select group of Renaissance practitioners, including Brunelleschi, Alberti, Michelangelo, Peruzzi, and, of course, Leonardo da Vinci, who excelled in several of the arts at the same time.
Francesco di Giorgio was in Naples in 1479 and in 1480.
Francesco died in Siena toward the end of 1501, leaving behind, in addition to the works already mentioned, a series of manuscripts of the greatest importance devoted to architecture and engineering.

In quel quarantennio avvenne qualcosa di irripetibile nella storia dello stato urbinate: grazie alle ricchezze accumulate esercitando il mestiere della guerra Federico costruì in Urbino una corte la cui fama si propagò in tutta Europa ed avviò una mole sterminata di lavori che coinvolsero tutti i paesi a lui soggetti.
Per realizzare i suoi progetti Federico chiamò alla sua corte numerosi artisti; fra questi predilesse l'architetto Francesco di Giorgio Martini e il pittore Piero della Francesca, che entusiasmò il signore di Urbino con dipinti dalla luminosità cristallina, dalle geometrie rigorose e dalle armoniche proporzioni.
Federico diventò signore di Urbino nel luglio del 1444 succedendo al fratellastro Oddantonio ucciso in una congiura di palazzo: il lungo governo del futuro duca iniziò con un brutale assasinio organizzato dallo stesso Federico.
