He was 28 years old, and a Captain in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 25 September 1857 at Lucknow, India, Captain Maude steadily and cheerfully pushed on with his men and bore down the desperate opposition of the enemy, though with the loss of one third of his artillerymen. He fully appreciated the dangers of the task he had undertaken, and but for his nerve and coolness, the Army could not have advanced.
