The college nearly failed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Reeling from the social and cultural upheavals that rocked schools nationwide, the College found itself facing a serious identity crisis and declining enrollment. Father Michael Scanlan, TOR, who became president in 1974, helped restore the institution's Franciscan identity by placing worship and religious fellowship, in forms heavily influenced by the Catholic charismatic renewal, at the center of campus life and orienting the curriculum toward an emphasis on traditional Catholic doctrine. [edit] Household Life A unique aspect of student life at Franciscan University of Steubenville is the existence of "Households." In 1974, then-President Fr. Michael Scanlan instituted a program that would give students a small, close-knit community that would foster a deeper understanding in the members' faith. Each Household has its identity that makes it unique amongst the others. Each has a particular devotion, e.g. Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Joseph, the Child Jesus, etc. and tries to live that out with varying commitments, such as weekly or daily rosary, Household Mass, Stations of the Cross, etc. All households have a covenant which spells out their devotions and how they are to live their lives. To foster greater community, oftentimes the household will be located on a particular wing in a dorm with a common room for meetings and fellowship. These communities have evolved since their beginning. They used to be mandatory and sometimes co-ed. Now, they are a single-sex community with a voluntary membership ranging from 3-50. At any time, if a group wants to start a new household it is possible. Much discernment is needed for this process however. [edit] Youth Conferences Every summer, Franciscan University hosts conferences for Catholic youth, both at its campus and at various locations throughout the country. Events include Christian music, talks, daily Mass, and adoration. For more than 20 years, conference music was directed by noted contemporary Catholic songwriter Jim Cowan. Bob Rice of The Backyard Galaxy leads the music at conferences held on the Franciscan University campus. Many other famous Catholic musicians also perform at the conferences in Steubenville and at other sites. Contemporary Christian Music (referred to frequently by the abbreviation CCM and sometimes called Christian pop music) is a genre of popular music which is lyrically focused on matters concerned with the Christian faith. ...
