The songs of his early career (under the pseudonym) all feature synthesizers plus, sometimes, machine sounds like that of an electric razor or of an electric drill. Almost all songs create a dark, mystical atmosphere, with Gadget's voice hovering monotonously over then unheard of, groundbreaking and still brilliant synthesizer sound effects. The lyrics are either very earnest, discussing subjects like guilt or life and death, or convey a black, sarcastic humour. (The song Collapsing New People is exemplary in many ways: (1) The title is a reference to the band, Einstürzende Neubauten (the English translation of the German band's name is collapsing new buildings), (2) whose members perform as guests on the line-up for the song, and the lyrics speak of the appearances of so many adherers of (3) New Wave at that time who all looked (4) so frail and ethereal as if about to collapse. Frank Tovey/Fad Gadget (Mute) (1967 words)
Frank's next work would sever the cord to his electronic recordings irrevocably, but first Mute collected together the work of his previous incarnation for the 'Fad Gadget Singles' album, which was released in November 1986.
Frank made a brief, and typically extreme move into mainstream-baiting with the Mkultra project, a collaboration with visual artists Malcolm Poynter and Simon Stringer, which resulted in the 'Immobilise' single of November 1987.
Tovey loved the idea that the strength of these songs lay in their seeming simplicity, and that the themes they traversed were just as relevant in 1989.
CMT.com : Frank Tovey : Biography (909 words)
As Fad Gadget, Tovey and his revolving door of conspirators released several singles and four full-length albums that stretched the boundaries of pop music during the late '70s and early '80s.
And after Tovey started making records under his own name in the mid-'80s, he continued to remain as unpredictable as ever, working within the realms of Cajun, blues, and folk, in addition to furthering his journey into experimental electronics.
Tovey was more likely to be compared to Bob Dylan than Gary Numan, as his lyrics favored the everyman over machines and aliens.
