The trophy is named after the former West Indies captain Sir Frank Worrell, and was first awarded at the end of the 1960-61 series. The cricket Board of Control and Sir Donald Bradman commissioned former Test Cricketer and professional jeweller Ernie McCormick to create a perpetual trophy. The trophy was to be presented to the winning captain of each Test series between Australia and the West Indies. Sir Frank Mortimer Maglinne Worrell (born 1 August 1924, Bridgetown Barbados, died 13 March 1967, Kingston, Jamaica) was a West Indian cricketer and Jamaican senator. ... Sir Frank Worrell's Test Cricket Statistics and profile (1126 words)
Frank Worrell made his Test debut for the West Indies in the 1948 home series against England at Qeens Park Oval, By the end of that series against England Worrell had left no doubt that he was a genius.
Worrell was a delightful cutter of the ball with his strokes in that area including that wristy dab which makes the late cut so daring.
Frank Worrell was knighted for his services to cricket in 1964, he died at the age of 42 on 13 March 1967, Kingston, Jamaica, from leukaemia.
