History

First mentioned in 772. In 1119 an Augustian seminary was build, the ruin still stands today in the center of the town.


In the second half of the 16th century, people from the Netherlands persecuted for their religious belief settled in Frankenthal. They were industrious and art loving people who brought economic prosperity to the town. Some of them were important carpet weavers, jewellers and artists whose "Frankenthaler Malerschule" (Frankenthal school of painting) aquired some fame. In 1577 the settlement was raised to the status as a town by the count palatine Johann Casimir. In 1600 Frankenthal was converted to a fortress. 1621 Spanish siege during the Thirty Years War, occupation by troops of different alliances, the crafts and the trade are ruined. 1682 reconstruction. 1689: the town is burnt to the ground by French troops in the war of the Palatinate and Orleans.


1750: Under the rule of elector (Kurfürst) Karl Theodor becomes a town of factories. Even mulberry trees are planted for silk production. 1755 - 1800 Frankenthal porcelain factory. Karl Theodor (born in 1724) reigned as Duke of Bavaria from 1777 until his death in 1799. ...


1797 under French patronage; from 1816 onwards under Bavarian rule. 1859 beginning of rapid industrial expansion.


1938: The jewish synagogue, build in 1884, is burnt to the ground during the so called Kristallnacht. Kristallnacht, also known as Reichskristallnacht (literally Imperial Crystal Night), Pogromnacht and in English as The Night of Broken Glass, was a massive nationwide pogrom in Germany and Austria on the night of November 9, 1938 (including early hours of the following day). ...


1943: In a bomb raid the centre of the town is destroyed almost completely.


1945: first American, then French occupation; dismantling of the industry; rebuilding of the town.


1946: Part of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, one of the German "Bundesländer". Today Frankenthal again is seat of some medium sized industries.

Hans Frankenthal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (2029 words)
Hans Frankenthal was born into a family of prominent Jewish butchers in Germany in July of 1926.
Max Frankenthal was awarded the Second Class Iron cross for his service during the First World War, reached the rank of Sergeant, was a member of the Veterans’ union after the war and took part in the erection of the first war memorial for the fallen soldiers from Schmallenberg.
Max Frankenthal tried to begin plans for the family's emigration, but eventually was unable to come up with money, and was still convinced that the Nazis would not continue their harassment of his family.
