Franklin is a city located in Lee County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 136.


Geography

Franklin is located at 40°39'59" North, 91°30'43" West (40.666460, -91.511828)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 136 people, 57 households, and 36 families residing in the city. The population density is 328.2/km˛ (851.3/mi˛). There are 58 housing units at an average density of 140.0/km˛ (363.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 97.79% White, 0.00% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 2.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 57 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.11.


In the city the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 31.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $33,125, and the median income for a family is $41,250. Males have a median income of $31,042 versus $14,107 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,129. 5.5% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History of Franklin County, Iowa - B (13880 words)
He came to Franklin county, Iowa, in 1880 and, two years later purchased one hundred and twenty acres of land, to which he added from time to time as his financial resources increased until he was the owner of four hundred and ninety-five acres in West Fork and Ingham townships.
Herbert E. Boehmler, an extensive landowner in Franklin county and prominently connected with commercial interests of Hampton as the proprietor of a large shoe store, was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, March 20, 1870, a son of George Henry and Elizabeth (Segelman) Boehmler, natives of New York.
The parents were pioneers in Iowa and during the early years of their residence here had to contend with all the struggles and hardships of a frontier district.

Franklin County was created in 1851 by an act of the State Legislature, but it was not organized until 1855.
The name Benjamin, honoring Franklin was chosen for he new town by both Garner and Ryan, and was used for some time.
The first census was taken in the new county in 1856 and the population was counted at 780.
