Franklin is a borough located in Sussex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 5,160.

Geography

Franklin is located at 41°7'2" North, 74°34'58" West (41.117157, -74.582868)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 11.8 km˛ (4.6 mi˛). 11.6 km˛ (4.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.32% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,160 people, 1,898 households, and 1,324 families residing in the borough. The population density is 443.7/km˛ (1,150.2/mi˛). There are 1,997 housing units at an average density of 171.7/km˛ (445.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 95.10% White, 0.62% African American, 0.35% Native American, 1.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.22% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 4.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,898 households out of which 36.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.22.


In the borough the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $44,985, and the median income for a family is $52,682. Males have a median income of $41,080 versus $26,201 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $19,386. 7.0% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.1% of those under the age of 18 and 9.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Franklin Borough is in the Fifth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 24th Legislative District.

Despite his youth, Franklin was a well-educated and talented administrator and he was quite liked by the people of New Jersey.
Franklin deviated from his father in his loyalty to the British crown and he actively worked to stem the tide of revolution by sending news of the independence movement to London.
Bill Franklin was taken to Litchfield, Connecticut, where he was eventually housed for eight months in a solitary cell with a floor covered with old straw matted from the waste of previous occupants.
