Franklin is a city located in Robertson County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,470. It is the county seat of Robertson County6.


Geography

Franklin is located at 31°1'34" North, 96°29'10" West (31.026222, -96.486086)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 km˛ (0.9 mi˛). 2.4 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,470 people, 533 households, and 351 families residing in the city. The population density is 616.9/km˛ (1,594.4/mi˛). There are 626 housing units at an average density of 262.7/km˛ (679.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 75.51% White, 19.52% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.93% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 8.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 533 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.5% are married couples living together, 17.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.20.


In the city the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $27,400, and the median income for a family is $33,889. Males have a median income of $31,818 versus $20,441 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,490. 18.9% of the population and 15.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.5% of those under the age of 18 and 25.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

When the community applied for its post office, another Texas post office was named Morgan, so residents changed the name to Franklin, after the name of the original county seat.
Franklin reported a population of 250 in 1882, of about 1,000 in 1890, and of 1,087 in 1942.
