It parallels Franklin Avenue, hence its name. It was originally a part of the mainline of the Brighton Beach Line and opened as part of that steam railroad line in 1878. The mainline was shifted in 1920, and the Franklin line was reduced to a full-time shuttle in the early 1960s. The north terminus is called Franklin Avenue station, and is at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street. The station is called "Franklin Avenue" instead of "Fulton Street" because it was built adjacent to the Franklin Avenue station of the pre-existing Fulton Street Elevated. The south terminus is Prospect Park. There are currently 4 stops on this line, as one of the existing stations, Dean Street, closed in 1995. The Franklin Shuttle was completely renovated in 1998-1999.
On November 1, 1918, in the worst rapid transit railroad accident to date, a speeding Brooklyn Rapid Transit train crashed inside a new tunnel leading into the Prospect Park station, killing at least 93. This became known as the Brighton Line Accident or Malbone Street Wreck.

The FranklinAvenue Line (also known as the FranklinAvenueShuttle and the Brighton-Franklin Line) is a rapid transit line of the New York City Subway in Brooklyn, New York City.
The FranklinAvenue Line was part of the original main line of the Brooklyn, Flatbush and Coney Island Railway or Brighton Beach Line, later known as the BMT Brighton Line.
At FranklinAvenue and Fulton Street, where the BMT Fulton Street Line elevated railway had given way to the IND Fulton Street Line subway, a large station is present with modern conveniences, elevators and escalators, providing an easier transfer between the shuttle and the IND line.
