Franz Steindachner (November 11, 1834 - December 10, 1919) was an Austrian zoologist.
Steindachner was interested in natural history, and took up the study of fossil fishes on the recommendation of his friend Eduard Suess.
Steindachner's reputation as a ichthyologist grew, and in 1868 he was invited by Louis Agassiz accept a post at Cambridge University in Boston.

Franz Steindachner (1834-1919), curator of the fish, amphibian, and reptile collection from 1861 to 1919, director of the "Zoological Court Cabinet" from 1876, and director of the entire "Imperial and Royal Natural History Court Museum" from 1898 to 1919 (right hand and some contours retouched).
In 1857, the student Franz Steindachner (1834-1919, Figure 3) became a regular visitor at the "Imperial and Royal Court Natural History Cabinet." After working in the fish collection on a temporary basis for close to a year, he was given a vacated office clerk position in 1861.
Steindachner returned with approximately 10,000 fishes and reptiles from a trip to Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands in 1864-1865.
