Wurtz was born in Rottweil, Württemberg (afterwards part of Germany). He studied theology and philosophy at the Maria Laach and Aachen Abbys. Wernz was appointed head of the Society of Jesus in September 8, 1906. He also founded a Jesuit journal. He died in Rome at about midnight, on the same day as Pope Pius X.
