Grinding is a slang term for a relatively raunchy dancing style popular in house and hip-hop dance moves. Grinding almost always involves two or more dancers rubbing their bodies against each other in a sexual manner. It is often performed at nightclubs and parties that play house and hip-hop music. Grinding has also gained popularity at high school and middle school dances across America. The meaning is basically the same as the self-describing term bump and grind for party dancing. Elements of "grinding" may be seen in a 1987 movie Dirty Dancing, and "grinding" is sometimes referred to by this term as well. The most common dance techniques involved in grinding are, but not limited to:

A variation of this technique has one partner supporting her or his weight with one or two hands on the floor (buttocks in the air) while the other partner, holding her or him by the waist, grinds on the buttocks in a manner that simulates the doggy style position. This variation of the dance is referred to in the music genre of reggaeton as perreo.
