Plot Summary

The story begins when Maxwell Kane tells readers of the time he went to daycare. His parents put him in daycare with Kevin, because both of their mothers were pregnant at the same time. Just a couple of years later Max's mom is killed by his father. Kevin has a leg brace and has to walk on crutches, which leads to an obsession with robots. Years later, when Max is twelve, Kevin moves in next door. Max sees that Kevin has not grown since daycare and is only about two feet tall (Max himself is almost six feet and three inches). Max is poking around the moving van when Kevin spots him, and gives him an evil look, raising up his crutch, and Max leaves. Before he goes, he hears Kevin talk in a very intelligent way. He ponders this while sitting in his basement room, which he calls the "down under". He later comes back up to see Kevin fly a little machine into a tree. He can't reach it, so Max goes over to help. It turns out that the device is a toy ornithopter, and the boys fly it around all afternoon, until the elastic breaks. Max then shows Kevin the down under, and Kevin is amazed at how 'lucky' he is to have it all to himself. Max and Kevin talk for a while, and Max is impressed by Kevin's huge vocabulary, especially since he is learning disabled. Max asks Kevin why he calls his mother, Gwen, the Fair Gwen of Air, which he had heard Kevin say. Kevin laughs and tells him that it's actually the Fair Guinevere, King Arthur's wife. This gets Kevin going about knights and their similarities to robots. Kevin's mother comes to get him, but when she sees Max, who is apparently the spitting image of his father, she runs away with her son. Max is disappointed that she is so afraid, thinking that it was because of his size.Gram comes to the basement and tells Max that Gwen and Max's dead mother were good friends and pregnant at the same time, and that Gwen has invited him to dinner. Gwen acts very sorry when Max comes over. The three of them eat hot dogs until Max is laughing at Kevin's robot stories and chokes, causing Kevin to yell and slap him on the back. A while later, Max has to take Kevin to the Fourth of July fireworks. On the way, Kevin and Max encounter Tony D, an infamous seventeen-year-old criminal who is sometimes called 'Blade' because he almost cut a man to death. Everyone is watching them in front of a millpond, which is disgusting and slimy. Max and Freak then wade into the millpond, which Max gets stuck in the middle of. Blade then retreats to the shore, where a police car chases him off and rescues Max and Freak. When Max returns home, his grandfather comments "What this man needs is a big cup of coffee", which Max realizes is his grandfather's way of saying that he's proud of him. Then Kevin asks Max to go on a secret mission with him to find so-called treasure in the storm drain at exactly 3:00am. So they get to the storm drain and hold a fishing line in between the cracks of the storm so Kevin pulled it up and Kevin got it but it wasn't treasure it was a purse. The next day, Kevin and Max return the purse to Loretta Lee. The plot later unfolds on Christmas Eve, when Max's Father Kenny " killer" Kane kidnaps Max. Theuy meet up with the Lee's and seek refuge in a fire - damaged building. Freak later arrives with a squirt gun filled with " Sulphuric Acid" ( really a combonation of many painful, but nontoxic things). Max admits to remembering his father killing his mother after Loretta accidently puts her arm on Max's shoulder Killer Kane breaks Loretta Lee's neck. Killer is arested and while opening presents Freak has a sesiure and is taken to the hospital. The next day Max visits Freak where Freak tells him the next time Max sees him he will have a bionic, regular- sized body. When Max goes to visit Freak a day later everyone is in tears, fearing for the worst Max literally plows through anyone in his way to see freak. When security gets a hold of him they want to arrest him. The head Physician understands what Max is going through and lets him return home with his Grandparents after explaining Freak's internal organs grew to big for his body. A year later Max still misses Freak. He finds out the fair Gwen has a new boyfriend, Rick and lives in L.A., after giving some thought Max decides to keep living and remember Freak.
