The Fred Hartman Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge which spans the Houston Ship Channel and carries State Highway 146 between the cities of Baytown, Texas and La Porte, Texas. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Texas. The bridge replaced the Baytown Tunnel, which had to be removed when the Channel was deepened to 45 feet. The spectacular yellow cables on the Fred Hartman Bridge are moving up to 20 inches during certain wind and rain conditions -- an unexpected problem that will shorten the life of the bridge if not corrected, engineers said Monday.
In a cable-stay bridge, the roadway is supported by high-tension steel cables running directly from a tower to the bridge deck.
In the case of the massive Hartman bridge, the phenomenon only happens in light rains and winds of 15 mph to 30 mph, Lynch said.
