Peart was elected Member of Parliament for Workington in 1945, serving until 1976.
Peart was made a life peer in 1976 as Baron Peart, of Workington in the County of Cumbria.

James Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx, KG, OBE, FRS, PC (11 March 1916 – 24 May 1995) was one of the most prominent British politicians of the 20th century.
As Wilson wished to remain an MP after leaving office, he was not immediately given the peerage customarily offered to retired Prime Ministers, but instead was created a Knight of the Garter.
On leaving the House of Commons in 1983, he was created Baron Wilson of Rievaulx, in Kirklees in the County of West Yorkshire.
