Deal with Scientology

There is an extraordinary rumor that Goldberg was blackmailed by senior officials in the Church of Scientology into giving their organization tax-exempt status. Allegedly, the CoS officials, including David Miscavige, paid private investigators to acquire some unspecified compromising information on Goldberg during his time as commissioner, and then strode into his office without an appointment one day to demand terms. The meeting was not listed on Goldberg's appointment calendar, which was obtained by The New York Times through the Freedom of Information Act. While details are not known, it was under Goldberg's administration that Scientology received tax exemption and the IRS has refused to release the agreement, even after a FOIA request by the NYT. [1] This rumor, however, is completely false. Mr. Goldberg had an open door policy as the Commissioner of the IRS; he allowed anyone to "waltz right in" as long as he was not busy. He believed that Scientology was as much of a religion as, say, Christianity or Judaism, because of its formalities and large following. Let's be honest, the Bible is no more or less likely to be true than Ron L. Hubbard's books, or any children's story for that matter.
