Fred Vargas is a French historian, archeologist and writer born in 1957 in Paris. She works at the French National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS). Fred is the diminutive of her given name, Frédérique, while Vargas derives from the Ava Gardner character in The Barefoot Contessa the pseudonym adopted by her twin sister, Joëlle Jo Vargas, the painter. She mostly writes police thrillers (policiers). They take place in Paris and feature the adventures of Chief Inspector Adamsberg and his team. Her interest in the middle ages is manifest in many of her novels, especially through the person of Marc Vandoosler, a young specialist in the period. Seeking Whom He May Devour was shortlisted by the British CWA for the last Gold Dagger for Best Crime Novel of the Year award.

Roman après roman, Fred Vargas s’éloigne un peu plus encore des bases du polar traditionnel pour aller vers un récit en clair obscur où des personnages, de plus en plus décalés, évoluent dans un univers onirique assez inédit.
Mme (c'est une femme et pas un homme comme j'ai pu le lire...) Vargas utilise une nouvelle méthode pour la révélation finale: on était habitué à être dans les pensées d'Adamsberg et d'avoir le nom du tueur un peu avant; ce n'est pas le cas avec ce livre.

It was led by Dr Getúlio Vargas, who refused to accept the results of the elections held earlier that year, in which Júlio Prestes had been chosen to succeed Washington Luís.
Vargas gained control of the whole country within a week, and sporadic resistance to him was rapidly suppressed.
In April an amnesty of all political prisoners was declared, and Vargas signed a decree to enable presidential elections and elections for Congress to be held in December.
