A mining engineer, Knut FredrikIdestam, founded a groundwood mill, which represented the very latest in papermaking technology, on the banks of the Emäkoski Rapids in Nokia in 1865.
Idestam originally built his mill on the banks of the Tammerkoski Rapids in the town of Tampere, but he relocated to Nokia which had better resources for hydropower production.
It was thanks to Idestam and the Nokia Company that the basis for industry emerged in Nokia.
